LESLIE SCOTT : Tile artist, sculptor and muralist

WALL SCULPTURE ~ ARCHITECTURAL CERAMICS ~ ART TILE ~ MURALS ~ MOSAICS ~ SIGNAGE ~ GARDEN ART

ARTIST STATEMENT

I consider myself an interpreter. My art is the translation of specific imagery, or moods and tones, into tangible and enduring works of beauty.

The impact of my extended time in Italy, initially as a student of fine art followed by over 16 years as a design professional in Rome, has clear influence in my work. The breadth of sensory experience that comes from walking daily on ancient pavements, completing mundane tasks in the shadows of iconic landmarks and growing to understand the seeming cacophony of age-old dialects, left me awed, humbled, and, at the same time, deeply enriched. Impressions of the permanent effects of time, much longer than anything I had known or experienced in California, are ingrained in my style and expression. Depth and timelessness are elements I strive for with my work and I value texture as a language that communicates beyond shape or color.

Working in ceramics allows me to literally get my hands dirty, and I love the tactile, physical experience of creating with clay. As each sculpture or series is pressed, sculpted, textured and glazed by hand, I like to think that a small part of me becomes embedded within and a trace of my passion is left behind to be my voice. My art is a personal response to the ongoing connection between myself, my world and my desire to contribute both to the beauty of a space and to the lives of those who live there. I’ve always known I wanted to leave my mark and each opportunity to create works for permanent installation satisfies this desire.

Through my textures, I connect to the viewers of my work and I’m especially pleased when my art invites interaction. Watching a child run their hand along a playground mural, or an observer reach out to experience the textures of a wall sculpture is always exhilarating.

BIO

Leslie Scott draws from an extensive background in two- and three-dimensional design as she works in clay. Her first tiles were sculpted in 2003. Since then, through continued creative experimentation and professional collaborations, her style has matured and her technique refined.

A California native, Leslie moved to Perugia, Italy in 1979 to study language and fine art. She completed apprenticeships with local artists in bas-relief sculpture and stained and leaded glass before transferring to Rome where she finished her degree in Visual Design at the Istituto Europeo di Design. During her subsequent 16 years in Rome, Leslie became fluent in the Italian language, immersed in local culture and progressed to Partner and Senior Creative in Italian design and advertising firms.

On moving back to California in 1997, Leslie expanded her creative focus to include home and accessory design. Commissions for custom furniture, lighting, upholstery and home accessories were fulfilled with whimsical creations reflecting her “old country” experience. Patterns are blended with textures and materials cross traditional boundaries.

With her return to clay in 2003, Leslie has given admirers of finely handcrafted art the chance to personalize living and working spaces with custom works that stylishly merge Old World craftmanship and contemporary sensibility. Since her first major public installation in 2006, Leslie has received grants from arts organizations to create large-scale ceramic and mosaic murals with and for schools and communities across the San Francisco Bay Area through her partnership endeavor On-The-Wall.

Leslie’s independent work focuses on interpretive and abstract wall sculptures, murals, mosaics and garden art.  Her tileworks and wall sculptures enhance homes, private collections, schools, parks and businesses. Garden art, and custom signage complement both residential and commercial settings.

Leslie welcomes commissions for installations of custom tile for private residences, commercial spaces, and landscape settings.
