JULIE DAVIDOW, Contemporary Abstract Paintings and Drawings

BIO:

Julie Davidow is a visual artist living in Miami. Davidow received a BS from UNF, Jacksonville in 1986 and studied painting at New World School of the Arts in Miami from 1996-1999.  Her work has been included in exhibitions nationwide including the Miami Art Museum; The NMWA, Washington, DC; the Tampa Museum of Art; and SECCA, Winston-Salem, NC. Recent exhibitions include Little Languages/Coded Pictures, Kathryn Markel Fine Arts, NYC; archiTECTONICS, Diana Lowenstein Gallery, Miami; An Exchange with Sol Lewitt, Mass MOCA. Her work is included in the permanent collections of the Miami Art Museum and the Girl’s Club Collection in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. She is recipient of ARTslant's Golden Frame award, Florida Artist Enhancement Grant, and the Chestler Contemporary Visual Arts award. Her work has been featured in New American Paintings Vol. 52  & 76, The Week, Architects & Artisans, ArchDaily, Wallstreet International, The Art Newspaper, Art Papers, The Miami Herald, El Nuevo Herald, Miami & Broward New Times and elsewhere.

ARTIST STATEMENT: 

My work seeks to establish order through the mapping of multiple visual cues of biological, botanical, geologic, cartographic, and architectural influences. These cues include specific, compositional “samples” of both the architecture of contemporary art museums and the contemporary art within these structures. This sampling is achieved through a diagrammatical folding and scoring of the raw canvas, creating a “scaffold” for the composition of painting. Contradiction is inherent to the work. A struggle to control and relinquish are persistent drives in the process, and reflect the ongoing struggle for balance between the natural and built environments.

Abstract paintings and drawings informed by Science and Nature, structured by Architecture and Geometry. Paintings done in mixed media(gesso, acrylic, laetex enamel, enamel paints) on canvas. Drawings done in graphite, ink and acrylic paint on archival papers.
