Carol Guthrie, Paints from the inside out

Comment     Print

Comes from Chicago, transplanted to New England. Started an art program at the School of the Art Institute and finished a graduate degree at MassArt, Boston. Developed an interest in modern art , making the leap from realistic watercolors to abstract acrylics, a process that developed over 25 years and resulted in today's work. Inspired by many artists like Picasso, Tapies, Hans Hoffman (Carole studied with John Grillo, a student of Hoffman's). Although the two works in the gallery don't show her interest in the relationship of the word to image, Carole lectured in Dublin and Ontario for the Int'l Word and Image Society. She says, "I always paint from the inside out, letting the process dictate where I will end, hoping to make a unity out of the piece."

She can hear a quote from Kandinsky as she paints: "Of all the arts, abstract painting is the most difficult. It demands that you draw well, that you have a heightened sensitivity for composition and for colors, and that you be a true poet. This last is essential."
